Working with people with Multiple Sclerosis
Author: Beth Rubenstein
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has left its indelible mark on my family. My paternal uncle was diagnosed with it, which sparked my deep interest in finding ways to help people living with this unpredictable neurological condition.
How Feldenkrais Helps MS
MS damages the myelin sheath protecting nerve fibers, leading to a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, weakness, and loss of coordination. The Feldenkrais Method is particularly well-suited for MS patients because it is gentle, non-fatiguing, and focuses entirely on the nervous system.
By using slow, mindful movements, the method helps the brain find new, alternative neural pathways to bypass damaged areas. Patients often report improved balance, easier walking, and a significant reduction in spasticity and fatigue, helping them maintain their independence and quality of life.
