Everyone knows what a massage is, right? It's a way of treating yourself when on holiday or after a long day of work. A bit of a "rub down" that makes you feel relaxed. But there is a significant difference between a spa-style relaxation massage and a clinical remedial massage.
Relaxation Massage (The "Normal" Massage)
The primary goal of a relaxation massage is exactly that-relaxation. It uses long, flowing strokes (Effleurage) to calm the nervous system and improve general circulation. It's a whole-body experience designed to help you de-stress and "zone out."
Remedial Massage (The Clinical Approach)
Remedial massage is a targeted treatment for a specific musculoskeletal issue. It involves:
- Assessment: Your therapist will perform physical tests to understand the cause of your pain or restriction.
- Targeted Techniques: We use a variety of tools like trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and PNF stretching to address specific knots and adhesions.
- Plan: It's often part of a broader treatment plan aimed at fixing a problem, not just providing temporary relief.
While a relaxation massage feels good in the moment, a remedial massage aims to create lasting change in how your body functions.
