Pandiculation - The Safe Alternative To Stretching
Ever since we can remember we've been told to stretch. Stretch if your muscles feel tight, stretch before and after your workout, stretch if your back hurts. Most of us were taught static stretching-pulling a muscle and holding it.
What is Pandiculation?
Have you ever watched a dog or cat wake up? They don't hold static stretches. Instead, they stiffen their limbs, contract their muscles deeply, and then slowly release them. This is called pandiculation.
Pandiculation is the nervous system's natural way of waking up the sensory-motor system and resetting the resting tension of muscles. When you passively stretch a tight muscle, the stretch reflex often causes it to contract back in defense. Pandiculation bypasses this reflex. By voluntarily contracting the muscle first and then slowly, consciously releasing it, you train the brain to lower the resting tone of the muscle, providing safer and longer-lasting relief from tightness.
