Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities.
Immediate Benefits
Some benefits of physical activity happen right after a session of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. These include improved thinking or cognition, reduced short-term feelings of anxiety, and better sleep.
Long-Term Health Benefits
- Weight Management: Exercise plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy weight and preventing obesity.
- Cardiovascular Health: Regular exercise strengthens your heart and improves circulation. The increased blood flow raises the oxygen levels in your body, lowering your risk of heart diseases such as high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, and heart attack.
- Blood Sugar Control: Exercise can lower your blood sugar level and help your insulin work better, cutting down your risk for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
- Bone and Muscle Strength: Weight-bearing activities like walking, running, and weight training help build strong bones and slow bone loss later in life. Muscle-strengthening activities help increase or maintain muscle mass and strength.
- Mental Health and Mood: During exercise, your body releases chemicals that can improve your mood and make you feel more relaxed. This can help you deal with stress and reduce your risk of depression.
Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity every week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week.
